I have been donating here for almost a year and a half. Tonight, I had an experience that has led me into choosing not to return ever again. For starters, I had to wait almost 20 minutes to even get started with my donation. Dez, the technician in the area that I was assigned to, finally got to me and after sticking my arm, she decided to reposition the needle. I noticed that after she did that, I had some blood trickling down my arm. I called her over and asked her about it and she said all it had to do with was some scar tissue that was built up. I continued pumping and as soon as the return started, my arm started bubbling up around the needle. I have had a hematoma before at a previous visit, so I knew exactly what was going on. I called her over and she stopped the machine and took the needle out and as she was doing that, I let her know that I did not want them to transfer the donation to my other arm. I do not have a good vein in my right arm and when I had to do that before, it didn’t work and was super uncomfortable. She responded with asking, in a very snooty tone, if I knew what would happen with refusing to continue and also mentioned that I wouldn’t be getting paid the full amount. I let her know why I didn’t want to use my other arm and that I have had to go through this before. She continued on saying that this would be a total blood loss and would cause me to be deferred for 8 weeks. And also noted that I wasn’t down as a “one arm only.” I said okay, that’s fine and she called someone else over and I could tell she was pissy about it by the way she was explaining the situation to the other technician. She continued to press about the situation to me and reiterated everything we already discussed while choosing to say “maybe this just isn’t for you” and so I let her know that I felt she was being pretty rude to me. She then got defensive and called over a supervisor, and as the supervisor walked over she told her “will you explain everything to her because apparently I’m being rude!” Mind you, there were 5 other donors around us during this process. So not only did her attitude reflect poorly on herself but it was also pretty embarrassing for everyone to witness. I had to sit and wait 30 minutes before I was able to leave. I also made sure to let the nurse know everything that happened before I left.

I feel like this situation was handled in a very unprofessional manner. Treating the donors with kindness and respect in any situation should always come first before one’s ego. I felt as if the docking on her sticks/donations for the day seemed to be the most important thing to her. I have been deferred for 8 weeks as it is after having another hematoma just a few weeks before with a similar situation. I also choose to drive there from Greeley in the thought of it being a nicer place than a different facility that is available in town. But tonight seemed to have proved me wrong on that. Unfortunately, I will not be returning. I truly do see the good in donating to help save people’s lives but not when you get treated with disrespect for a situation that is nerve-racking as it is.
